A woman receives an ultrasound at the Birthplace at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.
Pregnancy is an exciting time in your life. Your body will be going through many changes in the next few months, and regular prenatal checkups are important to your health and the health of your baby. The Birthplace at MedStar Franklin Square offers comprehensive maternity services, from the first visit to delivery and postpartum care.
Even though prenatal checkups and labor and delivery are routine for us, we know they are not routine for you. Our skilled staff will be there for you throughout your entire pregnancy, ready to answer your questions and help you navigate the world of prenatal care and testing. Check with your provider about when is the right time for you to get an ultrasound.
Most women get an ultrasound in their second trimester at 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Some also get a first-trimester ultrasound before 14 weeks of pregnancy. Check with your provider about when is the right time for you to get an ultrasound. Both our OB Evaluation Center and Women's Health Center offer ultrasound services.
An ultrasound, also called a sonogram, uses sound waves to produce pictures of your baby in the uterus (womb). Since ultrasounds do not involve radiation, they are risk-free and are usually painless. Ultrasound helps your health care provider check on your baby’s health and development.
Areas of the body are scanned in real time so the images can show the structure and movement of the growing baby. During an ultrasound, when the sound waves reach an object, it bounces backward or echoes. By measuring the echo wave, it is possible to determine the size and shape of the baby being studied.
