Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a specific type of minimally invasive surgery that uses a laparoscope, a thin tube fixed with a light and camera and several other small surgical instruments. The term is sometimes used refer to minimally invasive surgery in general.

During this type of minimally invasive surgery, your MedStar Franklin Square surgeon will make small incisions (up to half an inch long) in your abdomen and plastic tubes are placed in the incisions. Your surgeon will then insert the laparoscope and other surgical instruments through the plastic tubes, allowing access to the inside of your abdominal cavity.

Because your surgeon is unable to see directly into your body without a large incision typical of open surgery, the camera transmits images of your organs onto a monitor, thus allowing the camera to become your surgeon’s eyes.

Laparoscopic surgery is typically used to:

  • Check your belly or pelvis for abnormal growths, such as tumors, and remove them.
  • Check and treat conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)  and ectopic pregnancy .
  • Identify conditions that may make it difficult for a woman to become pregnant. Examples of these include cysts, fibroids and infections.
  • Perform a biopsy.
  • Determine whether or not cancer has spread to the belly.
