What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
“Minimally invasive” is an umbrella term for any surgery less invasive than traditional open surgery. Surgeons performing minimally invasive surgery uses smaller incisions and laparoscopic instruments, or the da Vinci® Surgical Robot. At MedStar Franklin Square, we offer different types of minimally invasive surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery technique in which your MedStar Franklin Square surgeon will insert a thin, lighted tube fixed with a camera and other instruments into tiny incisions in your abdomen. This allows your surgeon to view your internal organs while making surgical repairs or removing tissue.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Not only does minimally invasive surgery offer patients several benefits such as smaller incisions, improved healing times, less pain and lower risk of scarring, but in many cases, minimally invasive surgery also offers a higher accuracy rate compared to traditional open surgery.
