The Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center offers individualized treatment to adult patients who have type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes. 

We are proud to be recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015-16 hospital rankings as high performing in Diabetes and Endocrinology. This recognition highlights the quality of our services.

Diabetes affects nearly 29.1 million people, 9.3% of the U.S. population, according to the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Our diabetes educators strive to help people with diabetes and related chronic problems reach their optimal health and wellness.

A doctor's order is needed to schedule an appointment. A doctor's order, or prescription, indicates the diagnosis and the service that needs to be provided, such as type 2 diabetes and the Diabetes Self-Management Program. This is different from a referral that your insurance company may require. 

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

If you have diabetes, you are not alone. An estimated 29 million Americans live with diabetes and an additional 86 million have prediabetes. You can learn the skills you need to manage your diabetes and live a full and active live. This program will teach you skills to manage your diabetes and meet the goals set by you, your doctor, and your healthcare team.

Experienced certified diabetes educators, including a registered dietitian and registered nurse, teach the program. Certified diabetes educators are health professionals with advanced training in the area of diabetes care.

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s diabetes self-management education program has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for offering high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.


What does the Education Program cover?

  • What is diabetes?
  • Self-monitoring of blood glucose
  • Target goal ranges for blood sugar control
  • Meal planning
  • Exercise
  • Diabetes medicine
  • Acute complications including high and low blood sugars
  • Chronic complications including eye, kidney, nerve and cardiovascular disorders
  • Psychological impact of having diabetes
  • Foot care
  • Preventive care including the role of regular follow-up care

Family members are always welcome and encouraged to attend. An order from the primary care provider is needed to schedule an appointment.
