Debbie Kavanagh, MS,RN,CDE

Education Specialist

Debbie Kavanagh, an education specialist, has been a certified diabetes educator since 2000. She received both her Bachelor of Science in nursing and her Master of Science degrees from University of Maryland. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and its Maryland chapter. Debbie helps educate Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetic in 1:1 and group settings. She values the power of education having previously taught nursing students at the former Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and Stevenson University. Debbie is a CPR instructor for the hospital associates and assists with the Diabetes Support Group.

Sheila Patterson, MD, LDN, CDE

Dietitian Educator

Sheila is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist in Maryland. She completed her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and has practiced in the Baltimore region for over 4 years. Sheila is an outpatient educator in the Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center, helping patients individually and in group classes. With a specialization as a Certified Diabetes Educator, Sheila enjoys working closely with patients living with diabetes along with other nutrition-related conditions including cardiovascular and renal disease. Sheila additionally holds a Certificate in Weight Management and works with patients as a part of the Bariatric Surgery program to provide nutrition counselling prior to surgery. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics along with the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Kerry Strom

Kerry L. Strom, RD, LDN

Dietitian Educator

Kerry L. Strom graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in dietetics. She completed her dietetic internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Upon graduation from her internship, she accepted a job as clinical dietitian in Henderson, NV, and earned her Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian (CNSD) credential. Kerry then accepted a position as clinical nutrition manager in southern California and remained there until 2005 when she started working at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center. She currently focuses on working with individuals pursuing bariatric surgery, but also enjoys educating individuals regarding non-surgical weight loss, diabetes, hypertension, and other nutrition-related conditions.
