MedStar Health breast cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema management services are provided by extensively trained physical and occupational therapists. These programs have been developed based on theses specialists’ knowledge of current medical management of breast cancer, including local and systemic treatments and reconstructive procedures.

After developing an individualized treatment plan for our patients, a major focus of our program is to educate and instruct each of them in self-help techniques so they can manage their condition independently.

Aspects of the treatment program include any or all of the following, based on the patient's need as determined by the patient and physician:

  • Pre-Surgical Assessment
    • Daily level of function, needs and goals
    • Posture analysis
    • Flexibility and strength assessments
    • Limb girth measurements
    • Patient education on post-operative shoulder mobility exercises, breathing exercises, posture, lymphedema precautions, and daily activity guidelines
  • Post-Operative Assessment
    • Shoulder motion, upper extremity strength, and girth measurement
    • Cardiovascular assessment when tolerated
    • Functional limitations

Based on evaluation findings, the following post-operative treatment options are also available:

  • Psychological counseling
