MedStar Franklin Square Holds 12th Annual Drive-Up Flu Shot Clinic

BALTIMORE—Without leaving their cars, Baltimore-area residents can get a free flu shot Nov. 4 at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s 12th annual drive-thru clinic. The vaccination is recommended by experts citing the severity of last year’s flu season.

This is the hospital’s 12th annual drive-up and walk-up free flu shot event held at the Community College of Baltimore, Essex campus. Clinicians will be ready to administer the shots to anyone in the car aged six months and up, who don’t have a known allergy to the vaccine. Those who are getting the vaccine should remember to wear short sleeves.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone aged 6 months and up get a flu vaccine every fall unless they have a medical condition that would prevent them from doing so. The CDC classified the last flu season as “high severity,” killing 80,000 people, including 180 children.

Flu clinics were also held this year and last year at MedStar Harbor Hospital. Last year, 950 people were vaccinated at the two hospitals during the drive-up events.

Since 2007, MedStar Health has worked closely with county agencies to hold the clinic, including the Baltimore County Health and Human Services, Police, Fire and Public Works departments, and the Community College of Baltimore County, which allows the use of its Essex campus.

MedStar Bel Air Medical Campus Celebrates 1 Year

Expanded Services Mean More than Convenience in the Heart of Harford

Bel Air, MD—(April 12, 2017)— Last spring, over 600 Harford County residents attended the community open house at the MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus to see the shiny new bedless hospital and urgent care. Among the guests: Anita Owens, of Fallston.

While throngs of visitors toured the sunlit center from room to room, embracing its location on Route 924 at Plumtree Road, Charlsetta Holmes, known as Charli, was a short distance away, working in her office at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The convenience of top quality healthcare couldn’t have been further from her mind.

Anita however, was so impressed with the 100,000 square feet of comfort and technology, and its location, she promptly changed primary care physicians and scheduled her annual routine check-up.

Within days and weeks of the opening respectively, both Charli and Anita would each get devastating news: they had breast cancer.

“Having this facility here makes it more convenient for our patients to get treatment in their community without having to drive to Baltimore,” said Dr. Suman Rao, MD, chief of MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s Thoracic Oncology & Hematology at Bel Air. “When facing a devastating diagnosis of cancer, patients are assured they are getting the same state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment capabilities as any other major cancer care center.”

"MedStar Bel Air saved my life,” Anita said. “They found the cancer, treated me, and I am cancer free today because of them."

“This experience for me, was holistic,” Charli explained. “I wasn’t just going there for medicine. Everyone at Bel Air from the nurses, staff, oncologists, were very informative. They offered support, literature, brochures… they provided beauty tips; how to wear scarves and wigs, apply make-up, physical therapy. They did all they could to provide support. Everything I needed was in the same place.”

Since its April 12th opening last year, more than 30,000 Harford residents have received treatment in specialty areas including cardiology, imaging, outpatient surgery, primary care, rehabilitation, urgent care, women’s health and the comprehensive cancer center, where Anita and Charli received chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Last month, Charli received her final radiation treatment on her 60th birthday, and celebrated the milestone, cancer free.

“As a physician, one of the best advantages to working in this facility is being able to coordinate high quality care efficiently for my patients,” said Dr. Melanie Slack, site medical director. “I have had many instances where I see a patient in my office, send them immediately downstairs for a radiologic study, and that same afternoon, am able to discuss the results with the radiologist and arrange for a specialist consultation. It makes a huge difference to the patients, knowing that all of their doctors are communicating and working together as a team.”

Bel Air Medical Campus MedStar Franklin SquareBel Air, MD—(March 23, 2016)—MedStar Health is previewing its newly constructed 100,000-square-foot outpatient healthcare facility in Bel Air at a grand opening event on Saturday, April 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus, located at Plumtree Road and Route 924, will provide Harford County residents increased access to quality, comprehensive health care.

Featuring activities for the entire family, the event will give the public an exclusive first look at the state-of-the-art “hospital without beds.” The MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus will officially open its doors to patients on Tuesday, April 12.

As a one-stop healthcare destination, the facility offers an urgent care center, primary care medical offices and multidisciplinary specialized services, including women’s health, cancer, cardiology, rehabilitation, and more.

“MedStar Health is committed to providing quality, compassionate health care in communities where people live and work,” said Bob Gilbert, president of MedStar Ambulatory Services. “The convenience of having a comprehensive medical campus close by will be an obvious benefit to the individuals and families who live in the communities of Harford County.”

“The ambulatory care center also makes it possible for us to coordinate care and focus on delivering the right care at the right time,” Gilbert added. “For example, the ability to see a physician and have an MRI during the same visit will reduce the number of trips for care and time away from work. This translates to a high quality experience for our patients, while also being an efficient and cost-effective way to receive care. Our medical providers will benefit from having colleagues easily accessible for consults regarding treatment options.”

The Bel Air site is the next development in MedStar’s expansion of care to Harford County.
