BALTIMORE — MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center interventional pulmonologist Sy Sarkar, MD, FCCP, has received a national distinction of excellence that honors his contributions as an educator and places him among the top 4 percent of American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) faculty worldwide.

CHEST awarded Dr. Sarkar the Distinguished CHEST Educator (DCE) designation and plans to officially honor him during Monday’s Opening Session at CHEST Annual Meeting 2019 on October 21 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Sarkar, who is board certified in interventional pulmonology and critical care medicine and practices at the Angelos Center for Lung Diseases, was awarded for his commitment, involvement, and leadership in CHEST education programs and activities. The annual award recognizes his work from 2016 to 2018.

“The Angelos Center for Lung Diseases has been on the forefront of technology, research and clinical excellence and this award is a reflection of that national stature,” said Dr. Sarkar. “I’m very honored to be recognized among the top CHEST faculty and intend to continue the momentum.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Sarkar became the first in Maryland to perform an endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR), to ease breathing in a patient with severe emphysema. Known as the Zephyr valve, the breakthrough medical device was positioned into the lungs of a 69-year old Baltimore man using a bronchoscope, under anesthesia but without surgery.
