Delegate Ric Metzgar and MedStar Health Join for Open Forum on Cancer Care

The Public is Invited to Attend ‘A Night of Hope and Inspiration’

October 3, 2019

BALTIMORE—  With more than 33,000 Maryland residents projected to receive a new cancer diagnosis this year, Delegate Ric Metzgar (R-6) and experts from the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s Weinberg Cancer Center are making sure the lines of communication regarding prevention, screenings and treatment -are wide open. Together, at a free community forum, they will host A Night of Hope and Inspiration, at Kenwood High School, Oct. 18th at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Delegate Metzgar, a recent member of the House Health and Government Operations Committee in the Maryland General Assembly, recognized the value of people, particularly those at a higher risk for cancer, having access to physicians in an informal setting. “Getting the experts in front of our community members is key,” he said. “This is personal. We want to open the conversation with experts in cancer who care for our community. Let people ask questions face to face; be proactive in their healthcare. It could come down to saving lives.”

“The changes in cancer treatment happen by the hour and it is almost impossible to know all the advancements and the new technology now available. Our Weinberg Cancer Center is part of the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute which allows us to bring even more pioneering cancer care to the citizens of Eastern Baltimore County,” said Samuel E. Moskowitz, FACHE, president of MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and a senior vice president for MedStar Health. “We look forward to working with Delegate Metzgar to help educate our community.”

Invited experts:

  • Albert Aboulafia, D, FACS, MBA: Medical Director, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Center at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center

According to data collected by the American Cancer Society, approximately 10,000 people will die from a form of cancer this year; almost 90 percent of those will be from lung or a bronchus related cancer. Colorectal, pancreatic, breast and then liver follow in incidence.

This educational and informative event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required to attend. Call Delegate Metzgar’s Office at 410-622-5323, to reserve a seat.
