Center Only One in Maryland to Receive the Top Honor

BALTIMORE—
The Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center has received America's Best Breast Centers' Women's Choice Award, for a fourth consecutive year, and tops the list of breast centers in the state of Maryland. The recognition is the country's only award bestowed on breast centers based on robust criteria that considers patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s Breast Center was one of less than two dozen centers in the country to be designated a Featured Breast Center of Excellence and was the only one selected in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware and Virginia. Eleven others in Maryland were also honored for meeting high standards but were not designated Featured Breast Centers of Excellence.

“When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she is looking for compassionate care that considers her unique disease and tailors a treatment plan just for her,” said Dr. Kristen Fernandez, director of the center. “We are so thrilled that The Women’s Choice Award has yet again recognized our staff and their hard work to create the best outcomes for patients who are going through one of the biggest fights of their lives.”

The Women’s Choice Award sifts through accreditations and federal government patient recommendation rankings to determine which are the highest quality breast centers in the nation. America’s Best Breast Centers award winners must meet National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers standards from the American College of Surgeons or be designated as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence (Comprehensive) by the National Consortium of Breast Centers; they must carry the seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence; and they must receive a rating in the top 75% for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ patient recommendation measures, or their equivalent in the case of breast centers without hospital affiliation.

The surgeons at The Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center treat the disease by drafting a personalized treatment plan for to the patient’s unique needs. It offers targeted therapies or biologics, advanced clinical trials, tumor molecular profiling, intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), and accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI). All the breast surgeons have been designated “Top Doctors” by Baltimore magazine.
