Baltimore—MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center joins a record number of U.S. health care facilities committed to equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients. According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, a total of 718 health care facilities nationwide, including MedStar Franklin Square, have explicitly pledged themselves to equal treatment for LGBT patients.
Based on the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2013, an annual survey administered by the HRC, MedStar Franklin Square met the following four core criteria for LGBT patient-centered care, earning the coveted status of 2013 Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality:
• Patient non-discrimination
• Equal visitation
• Employment non-discrimination
• Training in LGBT patient-centered care
The HEI helps hospitals assess themselves against established best practices and ensure that they are complying with legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements for LGBT non-discrimination.
The HEI 2013 also required participating facilities to document that employees in key work areas had received expert training in LGBT health needs. As a result, nearly 5,000 healthcare personnel nationwide, including senior administrators, participated in training provided through the HEI, a unique educational initiative.
“The country’s health care facilities are leading figures in our nation’s movement toward full equality and inclusion for LGBT Americans,” said HRC President Chad Griffin.
