Ranked Among Nation’s Top Hospitals in Gastroenterology and GI Surgery
Baltimore—MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center has been named a top hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Report. Named third in both Maryland and the Baltimore metro area, MedStar Franklin Square also ranks among the nation’s top 50 “Best Hospitals” in gastroenterology and GI surgery.
Of the 5,000 hospitals surveyed, MedStar Franklin Square is one of only 147 hospitals to be nationally ranked in one or more specialties. MedStar Franklin Square also received high-performing scores in ten specialty areas: cancer; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopaedics; pulmonology; and urology.
“We are honored to be placed at the top of this coveted list, named among the very best hospitals in Maryland and our region,” said MedStar Franklin Square President Sam Moskowitz. “This recognition is a reflection of the care provided by our team and the focus we have placed on quality, service and patient safety. I am proud of all of our physicians, nurses and associates who work together in a united effort to pursue our vision of delivering excellence in patient care, each and every day.”
This year’s “Best Hospitals,” the 24th annual edition, showcases nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and spans 16 medical specialties, from cancer to neurology & neurosurgery. U.S. News created the “Best Hospitals” ranking system to identify the best medical centers for the most difficult patients—those whose illnesses pose unusual challenges because of underlying conditions, procedure difficulty, or other medical issues that add risk.
Factors used by U.S. News for the rankings included technology, hospital’s reputation among physicians, patient satisfaction and quality measures such as survival rates and nurse to patient ratio.
“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. Just 3 percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.”
MedStar Franklin Square shares the top list with several MedStar Health sister hospitals. A total of eight MedStar facilities were ranked as top regional hospitals, including MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in the Baltimore region; and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar National Rehab Network and MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the Washington, D.C., region. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital was ranked in both Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region.
