MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center promotes patient-centered care in a clinically safe and therapeutic environment. We are committed to treating patients, families, and visitors with respect.   • Patient and Visitor Code of Conduct

    MedStar Health is committed to providing high-quality care to our patients and communities in a safe and respectful environment that supports health and healing. To ensure our hospitals and care locations are safe, caring, and inclusive, we ask that our patients and visitors adhere to our Patient and Visitor Code of Conduct detailed here.

    If our Code of Conduct guidelines are not followed, patients may be asked to leave and make other plans for their non-emergency care. Visitors may be asked to leave and could be restricted from future visitation.

    Every day, our providers, nurses, and associates are committed to providing the highest levels of care to our patients. Please show them the respect they deserve and that you expect as a patient or visitor. Thank you for joining us in our commitment to ensuring a safe, caring, and inclusive environment for us all.

  • Security/Check-in

    • For the safety and security of our patients, associates, and guests, all visitors must check in at one of our security desks for entry and to receive a visitor badge.

      • Entrance 2: Patient Tower Main Entrance

      • Entrance 1: Women’s Pavilion (Women’s Pavilion visitors only)

      • Entrance 1: Digestive Disease Center (Digestive Disease visitors only)

      • Entrance 5: Surgical Pavilion (Surgical Pavilion visitors only)

      • Entrance 6: Emergency Department (ED visitors only)

    • Hospital security officers can provide escorts to the parking lot, assist with lost and found items, and handle public safety issues. Visit the office on the first floor of the hospital (next to the patient tower lobby) or call 443-777-7242.

  • Masking Policy

    Face masks are optional for patients and visitors who are not displaying symptoms of COVID-19 or other viruses (cough, runny nose, sneezing, etc). However, masks may be required in certain areas/rooms in the hospital.

    A medical provider or patient may request that masks be worn in a patient’s room or treatment area. These requests should be respected and honored.

    Face masks are available onsite for patients and visitors.

  • Tobacco Free Policy

    As part of our vision to be the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health, all MedStar Health facilities are tobacco-free. Smoking and the use of any tobacco products in or around our facilities is strictly prohibited. We appreciate your consideration and cooperation.

  • COVID-19 Patient and Those Being Tested for COVID-19

    • 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

    • One visitor at a time per patient.

    • Exceptions to visitors outside this timeframe are authorized by the nurse supervisor or the care team.

    • Visitors for patients with confirmed COVID-19 or PUI’s will be limited to compassionate care and must be restricted to the patient’s room or other designated facility areas.

    • Visitors must don Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided by hospital staff, including procedure mask, isolation gown, goggles or face shield (eye protection), and gloves; and must not be ill or show symptoms of illness.

Visitor hours and details by department

  • Emergency Department

    • 24 Hours

    • Two visitors are allowed per patient

    • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult

    • Exception: Crisis Intervention Service (CIS)

      • Visitors must be 18 years or older

      • 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. only

  • Inpatient

    • 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

    • Exceptions for visitors outside this timeframe are authorized by unit leadership or the nurse supervisor

    • Two visitors are allowed per patient

    • Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult

  • Maternal and Newborn Units

    • Obstetric Triage

      • 24 Hours

      • Patients may have up to two visitors at a time in Triage

      • Children must be under the supervision of an adult (18 years or older), who is not the patient

    • NICU

      • Parents may visit 24 hours a day

      • Visitation may be restricted for infection control reasons at the discretion of NICU administration and infection control departments.

      • Other friends and family members are allowed to visit when accompanied by a parent during regular visitation hours

    • Mother/Baby

      • 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

      • One adult guest may stay in the patient room after visiting hours or as an overnight visitor

      • Siblings may visit during general visitor hours but require another adult over the age of 18 to accompany them at all times.

      • Non-siblings younger than 18 years of age are not permitted to visit.

      • Visitation may be restricted further at the discretion of the medical team due to patient safety concerns

    • Labor & Delivery

      • Visiting hours are unlimited at the discretion of the medical team while the patient is in Labor and Delivery care

      • Up to three visitors at a time are permitted in the patient room at a time. Visitation may be restricted further at the discretion of the medical team due to patient safety concerns.

      • Patients recovering from a cesarean section may have one visitor present in the Labor and Delivery PACU, with Anesthesiologist approval

  • Behavioral Health

    • Adult Behavioral Health (2SB):

      • Monday through Friday, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.

      • Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 2 p.m. and 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.

      • 2 visitors per patient max (One visitor on the unit at a time and can swap out with second visitor

      • Treatment team may make an exception to the number of visitors if there is a clinical need.

    • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS):

      • Monday through Friday, 6 to 7 p.m.

      • Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.

      • 2 visitors per child max

      • 18 years or older (no minors)

      • Treatment team may make an exception to the number of visitors if there is a clinical need.

      • Visiting is limited to parents, guardians, and caretaker. Can be immediate family (if approved by treatment team)

    • Crisis Intervention Service (Emergency Department)

      • 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

      • 18 years or older (no minors)

  • Surgery and Post-Surgical Areas

    • A maximum of two visitors per patient in preop

    • One visitor is allowed per patient until 9 p.m. in the PACU

    • A maximum of two visitors per patient in Phase II

  • Outpatient Procedures, Treatments, Services

    • Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation

      • Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

      • Visitors may be required to wait in the waiting area

    • Diabetes & Nutrition

      • Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

      • Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult

      • Visitors may be required to wait in the waiting area

    • Heart Station

      • Daily, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

      • Visitors may be required to wait in the waiting area

    • Infusion Center

      • Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

      • Patient may only have one visitor/companion

      • Patient coming from a Nursing home, Skilled Nursing Facility, etc, must be accompanied by a qualified assistant

      • Children under the age of 16 are not allowed to accompany a patient in the infusion center

    • Pulmonary Function Tests

      • Monday and Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

      • Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

      • Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (open one weekend per month: Please coordinate with office)

      • Visitors may be required to wait in the waiting area

    • Sleep Center

      • 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (office hours)

      • 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. (testing hours)

      • Children must be accompanied by a parent

    • Wound Center

      • Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

      • Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult

      • Visitors may be required to wait in the waiting area

  • Outpatient Physician Offices

    • Contact your physician’s office for their visiting hours and requirements

  • Patients at End of Life/Hospice

    • 24 hours, 7 days a week for patients within the Accent Hospice unit or for end-of-life patients within any of our inpatient units

    • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult

Patient information and map

While you are here in the hospital, we want your stay to be as safe, pleasant, and comfortable as possible.

Information about a patient's stay and condition is confidential. We list in the patient directory only those patients who wish to be included. Only designated family members may speak to a member of the patient's healthcare team for information regarding a patient's condition and care. Learn more about information specific to patients.

An ATM machine is located on the first floor of the main hospital near Security.

If the unit permits, cards, flowers, balloons, and fruit baskets sent by family and friends will be delivered to a patient's room (please see below for special restrictions). If the hospital receives your mail after you are discharged, we will forward it to you. If flowers are delivered after you leave, the florist will be notified of your discharge so they can be delivered to your home. Fruit baskets must be sent home within 24 hours. Please note the following special restrictions:

  • Oncology Unit: Fresh flowers and fruit baskets may be restricted. Please check at the nurse's station before entering the patient's room with these items. Silk flowers and latex-free (Mylar) balloons are allowed.

  • Intensive Care Unit: Flowers, balloons, or fruit baskets are not allowed.

The Auxiliary Gift Shop is located on the first floor in the tower lobby and offers a variety of items including light snacks, specialty gift items, toiletries, and reading materials. 

The hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. MasterCard and Visa are accepted for your convenience.

For your convenience, we offer free wireless Internet access to our patients and visitors. Patients, family members, visitors, and other guests may bring laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and/or other Wi-Fi enabled devices for use during their stay or visit. Simply select “MedStarGuest” under your     Wi-Fi settings to get started.

We offer free wall-mounted cell phone charging stations as courtesy to the loved ones of our patients while they wait. You can find them in the following areas:

The Patient Care Tower was designed to provide a healing environment for patients and visitors. We invite you to visit our three-story atrium, where in addition to easy access to information and admitting, you'll find a relaxing bamboo garden, gentle waterfall, and cozy fireplace.

Communication is an essential part of providing quality patient care and positive outcomes. Patients have the right to be communicated with in a manner that is concise, clear, and comprehensible, no matter what their circumstances. To ensure effective communication for all of our patients, we offer the following services:

  • For the Hearing Impaired: A teletypewriter (TTY) machine is available for patients with hearing impairments. If you did not request a machine upon admission, ask your nurse to make arrangements for one to be brought to you. Amplified telephones, interpreters, and other special arrangements for the hearing impaired are also available upon request.

  • For the Sight Impaired: Reading and writing assistance is provided as needed.

  • For Non-English Speakers: A language telephone line is available at no charge. Please ask your nurse to make arrangements.
