Drs. Scott Krugman and Michelle Chudow, Extraordinary Child Safety Advocates

Baltimore—(December 7, 2016)— Dr. Scott Krugman, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center chairman of pediatrics, and pediatrician Dr. Michelle Chudow, will be honored by Baltimore County executive, Kevin Kamenetz, and Baltimore County state’s attorney, Scott Shellenberger, for providing extraordinary care to abused children in conjunction with the Baltimore County Child Advocacy Center (CAC). A special award recognition presentation will be made by the county leaders at the hospital, Dec. 14.

MedStar Franklin Square has been on the forefront of child protection since 2000 when Dr. Krugman formed the multidisciplinary Child Protection Team (CPT) and partnered with Baltimore County Police and the Department of Social Services to improve care for victims of child abuse in Eastern Baltimore County.

Under his leadership, MFSMC has trained associates to provide acute sexual abuse/assault examinations, implemented comprehensive child abuse and neglect services, and is a provider of support and case management to victims of child abuse.

For the past 2 years, Dr. Krugman and his team have partnered with the CAC to provide weekly medical coverage for child sexual abuse victims. State’s Attorney Shellenberger brought this to the Baltimore County executive’s attention, citing Dr. Krugman, Dr. Chudow, and the entire Child Protection Team, for rising above the call of duty. “They really stepped up to the plate to assist in all kinds of child abuse cases and are really going out of their way to be great citizens in their community,” he wrote to the county executive.

Dr. Krugman, named 2015 Pediatrician of the Year, by the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, has served on numerous statewide child abuse committees and is a long-standing member of the multi-disciplinary Baltimore County Child Protection Panel. Providing pediatric care for over 18 years, Dr. Krugman has been an integral force in enhancing the health of children in Baltimore and the surrounding regions.

Dr. Chudow consults on active investigations for all forms of child maltreatment, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and medical neglect as the Medical Director of the CAC. She is also a member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, and is passionate about educating medical providers, child care workers and teachers, and parents about the prevention, recognition, and reporting of all aspects of child maltreatment.

Additionally, Drs. Krugman and Chudow have provided specialized forensic sexual abuse medical exams, SAFE exams, medical consultations on CPS cases, and expert court testimony. Through the provision of these specialized services and participation in the weekly CAC multi-disciplinary team meetings, MedStar Franklin Square has advanced the knowledge of Child Protective Services, police, and the state's attorney in medical considerations for child maltreatment cases.
